The Hearst Foundations, philanthropies operating independently from Hearst, established the United States Senate Youth Program in 1962 for talented young leaders to learn about government and public service. Each year, participants are competitively selected to convene in Washington, DC for an all-expenses-paid week of meetings with the nation’s highest elected and appointed leaders. The students experience democracy in action and also receive a $10,000 college scholarship. In 2023, Hearst Foundations Directors William R. Hearst III, chairman of the board of Hearst and Frank Bennack, former Hearst CEO and executive vice chairman, joined the delegates for the annual Senate Reception, attended by 70 senators and the program participants.
